HOW THE ALGORITHM WORKS

The Method

Otto doesn’t guess. He calculates. This page explains the logic behind the seagull — how he scans the year, identifies bridge seams, and maximizes your continuous time off without wasting a single PTO day.

The Core Thesis

Most people spend PTO one standalone day at a time — a Friday here, a Monday there. By December, their balance is zero and the year felt like a continuous treadmill.

Otto’s thesis:Federal holidays and weekends are completely free days off. If you cluster PTO strategically adjacent to them, you turn standard two-day weekends into five-day breaks, and five-day holiday weekends into ten-day vacations. The math isn’t magic — it’s just smart calendar design.

BRIDGING ANATOMY EXAMPLE: Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26. Most people take the following Friday off (spending 1 PTO day) to get a 4-day weekend.

Otto sees the weekend before Thanksgiving (Nov 21–22) and the weekend after (Nov 28–29). If you lock in 4 PTO days — Monday through Wednesday before, plus the Friday after — you secure 9 consecutive days off. That is a 2.25× multiplier boost on your time off.

The Three-Step Optimizer

Step 01

Map the Year

Otto loads the calendar for your target year, marking federal holidays, weekends, and your custom pinned dates as fixed days off.

Step 02

Find Seams

Otto scans the calendar grid for clusters where a holiday and two weekends can chain together with minimal PTO spent.

Step 03

Deliver the .ics

Otto selects the best time-off combinations for your budget and packages them into a simple, exportable .ics calendar file.

The Multiplier

Otto’s output always highlights your Vacation Multiplier: total days off divided by the PTO days spent. A standard plan delivers a flat 1:1 ratio. A smart planning year gets you a multiplier between **1.8× and 2.2×**. Under exceptional years (like 2026, where Christmas and New Year’s fall near weekends), the multiplier can easily exceed **2.5×**.

The multiplier isn’t a random score — it shows how well your breaks are connected. If your multiplier falls below 1.5×, it means you’re spending days in isolation without leveraging weekends or paid holidays.
